THE DISTRICT COUNCIL OF CLUJ
The keeping and transmitting of the traditions that were left to us, as a dower by the ancestors is without doubts, a task that honour and oblige us. The District Council of Cluj understood to asume the responsibility of promoting the inestimable values of the Transylvanian folklore, and for that reason they took part actively in the organization of this manifestation that can be considered as a traditional one. “The Transylvanian fest” brings to Cluj-Napoca ensembles from Ardeal, giving to the folk lovers the opportunity of meeting the Romanian’s village traditions, and not only. Near the statue of Avram Iancu will perform, for three days, over 20 artistic ensembles from Cluj and from the neighbourhood and the popular creators will expose the results of their work. This edition of the festival is in the same day as “The Europe’s days”, and the fact that on the stage will perform ensembles of the minorities too, is a another reason for all the citizens of Cluj to come, to see, to listen and to beware.
With this opportunity I wish good luck to all the participants, and I wish the wirth would be at home in our village.

Gratian Serban
The President of the District Council of Cluj

THE ETHNOGRAPHICAL MUSEUM OF TRANSYLVANIA

The interest of the whole Europe for the traditional handicrafts shown until the highest levels should make everyone think more about the numerous programs of updating the old handicrafts. In this cultural zone of the Europe we still find people who are modeling the wood with tools inherited from their grandparents, we can meet creators that know the plants secrets and that are dyeing the wool with this plants and we can meet many other people from all over the country that know how to transform the things into art. All of them are doing today things that are about to be forgotten. What we can see today in this handicraftmen’s fair is the fruit of their handwork offered to our eyes so we can enjoy them and their utility.

THE INSTITUTE OF CULTURE, CULTS AND NATIONAL CULTURAL PATRIMONY CLUJ

The festival of culture and folk traditions “The Transylvanian fest” is a big manifestation, that it is structured on a new attitude concerning the cultural patrimony, in general, and concerning the folk traditions, in particularly. From this point of view, the folk traditions are an organic part of the nation and represent the major values of its culture. These have been an ontological identity card and they constitute the final expression of our identity. Therefore, they are always active in the collective memory. The human sensibility didn’t make, so far, revolutionary jumps, didn’t know any breaking off in its evolution. It has a remarkable memory and remains open to all the values created by itself during the time. More than that, the popular tradition, the song and the dance satisfy another dimension of the human sensibility: the festive feeling of existence. The holiday represent for the human being, a loop out of the profane time and the periodical contact with the sacred things. It is not only a cultural value but it is also a significant part of the life. That’s the reason why a folk festival is a performance, an actualization of the artistic values, but it is also a ritual. This duplicity is being perceived such as it is, and that explains the audience that these kinds of manifestations have even in the urban environment. Of course, in a folk festival the most important things are the artistic elements, the criterion of the artistic values being the authenticity. The same criterion is being applied in “The Transylvanian fest”, an interethnic festival to which is participating 22 folk groups. At this festival the folk handicraftsmen fair has a very big importance. We assist here at the manifestation of an exceptional vitality of the tradition. At the festival there are over 90 handicraftsmen from all the regions of the country, all of them being renowned for the originality of their creations.
